She makes friends with the three, falls in love with one of them during what is essentially a very long, scenic drive through Spain, interspersed by long silences which are supposed to convey something, poetry being recited in the background and epiphanies that each of the three protagonists have on the way. On their very first adventure, they meet Laila (Katrina Kaif), a diving instructor who believes life is about seizing the moment. The trio take a three-week trip to Spain, with the understanding that each of them gets to involve the other two in an adventure sport of his choice. Kabir (Abhay Deol), the son of a rich businessman has just proposed to the daughter (Kalki Koechlin) of another rich businessman and decides it is now time to honour the pact he made with his best buddies in college. There is of course the “chudail” girlfriend, and the fun-loving independent-spirited girl who everyone wants to fall in love with. There is the joker of the group, there is a hard-nosed, practical one and there is the peacemaker who tries to behave sensibly all the time. It tries to re-create the same coming-of-age effect, the same clever lines, but with half the success of the earlier film.Īkhtar takes her three protagonists to Spain, not Goa, but you can see the similarities in so many other ways. Don’t believe the filmmakers when they say “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” is not a rehash of Farhan Akhtar’s “Dil Chahta Hai”. That could be the tagline for the whole film. He talks about the music, how the logo would unfold and finally, is asked by another protagonist - “Yeah, but could you please get to the point?” Kabir (Deol) is the wealthy scion of a construction firm, whose engagement to uptight interior designer Natasha (Koechlin) sets the three friends on a road-trip to Spain.At one point in Zoya Akhtar’s film, the three protagonists are sitting in a bar in Spain, celebrating the fact that they have just completed a daring sky-diving adventure, when one of them (Hrithik Roshan) starts talking about an old Doordarshan ad. Imran (Akhtar) is a copywriter who writes poetry. Arjun (Roshan) is a broker with a plush three bed-roomed house in London, who leads a frenetic deal-making, yen-and-pounds-and-dollar-collecting life. ZNMD is designed as a feel-good bromance.

ZNMD is a well-shot road trip, which strings together a series of pretty picture card snapshots, whose characters do not spark or crackle except in stray moments. DCH was a film about a certain kind of privileged young, displaying a certain kind of privileged angst, but it spoke to us.
And as opposed to those younger youths who made us care about them, these are constructed fellows we can pick up, examine, set down, and move on. These are distinctly older professionals, doing ditto. The DCH boys were twenty somethings, in search of themselves. Because the hangover of the former is overwhelming- look, look all those cool and groovy people doing cool and groovy things.
So why am I talking about 'Dil Chahta Hai', when I'm supposed to be telling you about 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara', which is out ten years after? Because it plays out the exact same scene for long minutes-there's the long-finned car driving down gorgeous roads, and there are those loaded guys who travel only first class.
The film which iconized, for the first time in Bollywood, affluent young males doing nothing more strenuous than pushing buttons on a gaming console, bonding on loungers which cost more than a small car, in homes which cost more than a minor mall.
What does this scene remind you of? 'Dil Chahta Hai'. Three guys slouched artfully one at the wheel, the other next to him, the third splayed across the backseat, feet sticking out, slumbering. Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif, Kalki KoechlinĪ fancy convertible speeding down scenic roads.
